Prior to tearing down my 72 vert for the frame off I was running a BBC 396 with #6272292 oval port open chamber iron heads. The heads have been deburred, bronze guides, larger 2.19/1.88 ferrea valves with hardened seats installed. I was very happy with these heads matched with a comp cams extreme energy cam. I now plan to build a 496 to drop in and would like to have about 500hp. Does anyone know if these heads will support this goal and if so a recommendation on cam, intake, carb, etc? Primarily street duty with occasioanl trips to the track for fun. Thanks
I made 550 HP with a 11.25-1 compression 427 with Edelbrock RPM performer oval head and a mild Hydraulic roller cam. Open chamber heads will flow way better than closed chamber as well. EVEN A bs 496 WILL MADE 500 HP, BUT THE HEADS WILL BE THE BOTTLE NECK UNLESS YOU GET SOMEBODY TO DO A BUNCH OF BOWL WORK, AND WORK BEHIND THE VALVE. They will be done by 5500-5800
My 489 with mild hydraulic cam, rpm inlet & 10.5 cr Brodix Race Rite 'small' oval port heads on dyno made 528 hp @ 5800 rpm - more importantly it made 565 ft/lbs torque @ 3800 rpm!

That's cool having that in England. I have lived in the UK for something like 13 years at a few different times. I just moved over from Aberdeen about 12 months ago. I still call home the USA.

Many people people would be very surprised actually what does go on in the UK with USA sourced cars, mine is fairly inconsequential in comparion with some. There are many 'seriously built' cars over here. For example one of our local guys has just finished a major upgrade to his '55 Chevy, a 555 cu in with big Procharger reckoned to be 1200-1600 hp! Perhaps its the typical British low key, tongue-in-cheek attitude to achievements - or maybe the fact that motor sport like drag racing and USA related car performance is 'looked down' upon by many so-called car enthusiasts over here For example F1 racing - it just has to be the automotive equivalent to golf, dosen't it?
