Thanks to you guys for so generously sharing your knowledge and experience. We novices really do appreciate your help. I recently bought a 1972 SB. It was in boxes and not running. I've installed new power steering cylinder, new control valve and new hoses. After I connected the hoses to the power steering pump and started it, there was a slight leak where the hose screws into the pump. I was thinking about rebuilding it. Looking at the rebuild kits at the various suppliers, it doesn't appear that the kits come with a new seat where the hose screws into the pump. It seems that if you don't replace the seat you will still have leaking problems. Questions:
Is this a legitimate concern about the seat?
How much play is too much in the shaft. I'm guessing mine has about 1/32 inch. Is this too much.
How can I determine if this is the original pump? Are there any markings?
Sometimes it is the 45 degree flare face of the hose tubing that can cause a leak. Inspect that part as well.
Look at the brass connector in the pump discharge fitting. You should see a completely circular indentation in the face of the connector. That should indicate a good seal.
1/32 inch of in-out play of the pump driveshaft is normal.
Sorry, can't help you on identification as to what pump you might have.

Jim, thanks for the input. But where can I buy a new seat? None of the kits that I've seen includes it.
