Have a 76 with a loose steering column. I deem it unsafe to drive as is. The column moves about 1/2-1 inch in all directions from inside the metal coupler. What is inside there that could be causing this? It looks like a stiff undertaking to get to the area to repair.
When I bought my 68, it had the same problem.
The upper shaft was lifted from the lower shaft part, in such that the upper bearing had been lifted out of the housing.
I pressed the bearing back again in the housing and added some glue.
Haven't had any problems so fare, but assume that the plastic pins that hold the two shafts together should be replaced. Otherwise I will expect that I will pull the bearing out again at some time.
As usual, Ganey hit it dead on. Jim's papers tell all. Any of the special tools are available as loaner's from Autozone- that'll save you some cash. The only thing you'll probably need is the retainer for the clip.
