I have just started up my newly rebuilt motor and the temp sensor is not working. I had origionally replaced the very old but functional sensor with a new one, but after reading the posts in the archives the questionable accuracy of the after market sensor, I decided to reuse the old one. When I grounded the sensor wire, the temp gauge bounced around and I assuming the wiring is working. Since the sensor worked before the overhaul, what do you think could cause it not to work now? Could it not be making a ground because of the teflon tape?
Secondly, the paddle connector on the end of the sensor wire was hanging on by a thread and I did replace it. I have also read that shorting the temp sensor wire can alter the reading. Could shorting it by 1/2" alter the reading?

By the way, the motor sounds great!

Thanks again guys!
Teflon tape will play havoc with the sensor. The brass threads will seal theselves and do not need any help
Thanks Petes 73. I will pull the tape tomorrow. The new sensor I originally had installed had tape on it from the factory and I thought I might need it.

Reason: reword
I have sending unit problems myself. My advice to all, don't touch it, don't even put your finger on it. It is so hard to find a close match. I bought a sensor that was reading 30-40 degrees higher than the original. I currently have one that is 20 degrees higher than the infared gun is reading. I am still looking for one that is very close to acurate to give me that piece of mind while driving. My vette is a 1981.
