Default Engine break in no exhaust

Engine break in with no exhaust, just headers. Are there any issues with this? Has anyone done this? I am concerned about heat.

I would like to have the car running and drive it to the muffler shop rather than have it towed.

I have done this a few times. You just can't hear anything. Make sure the floor boards are protected and nothing flammable is nearby. I prefer to be able to hear the motor but it will not hurt anything running open headers.

Lots of guys have done it....including me Just make sure that you have a timing gun hooked up so you can dial in about 25 degrees advance at about 2000-2200 RPM while your breaking in the cam (assuming a flat tappet cam). this will keep the header heat down.

You may want to contact your neighbors to let them know this event is taking place so they won't think there is a gun fight going on next door

I don't think you'll believe how loud open headers are. IMHO, pick up a couple of el cheapo mufflers with header flanges on them.

I keep a couple of these around for this exact scenario:

I do the same thing. I have two stock 5.0 Mustang mufflers I have adapted to hang off the headers to keep it quiet during breakin. Those little suckers even knock the noise out of 540's and 555's!!

I used open headers for my break in a couple of weeks ago. I got 45 degrees attachments from auto zone. No problems. You can check out my video here. http://forums.corvetteforum.com/c3-g...-20-years.html

I drove my open headered 70 Torino GT 429 CJ to the shop for the exhaust hook up. I shut it off at a couple of lights, finally was pulled over about 2 miles fron home, told him what I was doing and he let me drive the other mile to the shop.....would I do it again?? Never,

I have done the same, but I did have a pair of straight pipes coming out the side to redirect the heat. Loud as hell but did what I needed till I decided what exhaust to install..
