Not so common starter ?
i have finaly got my 496 bb running!!! when i started the car for the fourth or fith time i noticed a awful grinding noise i figured it was the starter was to close to the fly wheel and i would shim it to correct the problem. this is a ac delco starter brand new. when i got underneth the car i noticed that the starter was to far out. the pinion shaft was about 3/8" to far away im getting about 10% engagement.. i was wondering if any one has ever milled there starter to bring it closer to the flywheel???? oh by the whay its a automatic with a 168tooth.. moter head, gkull i expect to se a good response! lol

You should be using a 'cast iron' nose starter...I think you have the wrong one. Never is it required to cut the nose of any starter. I suspect the one you have is aluminum which would not be correct.
