Default Half Shaft Question

Hi All,
I'm restoring a 73 coupe, and it seems that the u joints on the half shafts are two different sizes. The ones at the diff is larger, and takes the heavy duty cast clamp, while the one at the wheel is smaller in dia. and takes a strap type clamp. ?? Both sides are like this. I talked to a vette restorer and he told me that he had never heard of this before..... Could anyone out there clear this up for me ?? THANKS in advance.

On the 73s they would have been the same size. Sounds as if you have outer yokes from a later model. If that is not a BB car the rear has also probably been changed. My guess is you have an old rear and new style outer yokes. Pics. would help.

63-79 1/2 shafts should all use 1350 joints.

Outer end of 1/2 shafts should be pressed into a flange that bolts to the spindle, there shouldn't be any kind of clamps/straps out there. Like Gary said all shafts should be 1350 series Spicer U-joints.

Could be that somebody replaced the Trailing Arm Spindel setup with an 80-82. And then made 1/2 shafts with diffrent sized u-joints on either end. This would be an odd one.

Not that odd really

You can get Spicer offset u-joints specifically for your situation.

If you are trying to match up a small driveshaft with a large differential pinion yoke, or vice versa, this little Spicer U Joint will save you a big headache.
Free Freight
$31 ... which isn't much more than the normal ujoints.
