Can anyone ID this bell housing? It was a thrown in with another purchase for free but the guy thought it was a Corvette part. It has the following numbers on it: 8779552 GM1 D2082

I don't recognize the number, but it appears to be the type of bell housing GM used from about 55-62. These used a leather boot in the large openning to seal around the fork. In 63, Chevrolet went to the full round bells that they used through 81. The number you gave doesn't appear in my 1962 Chevy parts book. Many of those early bells had a casting number beginning with an "8", but a part number in the parts book beginning in "3".

You may want to post in the C1-C2 section, someone else over there may be able to identify it further.

If you Turn the First 8 into a 3 then its a GM Part Number. A 61 62 Corvette Uses 3779553 wich is an Aluminum Bell. As My book is Corvette only it would seem that this is a none Corvette part probably around 1960.
