Default Saginaw ID help, please.

The transmission case numbers are GM 392 5658. It has a 3 ring spline.

Anyone have or know where I can get info on this (year, what it might have come out of, etc.)?

TIA

My "Corvette by the Numbers" book shows 3925647 as the main case for a 68-69 Vett 3 speed. Doesn't look like it came out of a Corvette. Is yours a 4 speed? I just Googled saginaw 3925658 and a ton of hits came up. Looks like it was a 'B' body 4 speed amoung other apps.

Thanks Gary.

It is a 4 speed. I'm trying to get an assy kit for my shifter and hurst is being a PIA. Just trying to gather as much info as possible for them.

Your avatar says you have an '80 but from what I have read the Saginaw was only used on '78 & '79s. It hass an iron case and 7 bolt cover. 2 or 3 cuts on input shaft determine close or wide ratios - don't know which. Apparently L48s got the wide ratios.

It is an '80. I swapped it from an auto a couple of years or so ago. The transmission and hurst shifter were in a 79, but I thought they only put Muncies in these cars and assumed that both were transplanted.

I think the same kit will fit all saginaw transmissions. Don't know if you will be able to trace where it came from. GM used it on everything from Camaros to Vegas and Monza. Good transmission as long as you stay below the 200 hp mark.

That's what I thought until I talked to Hurst.

I'm well above that and no problems so far.

Found this on the 78-79 Saginaw. As others have said, looks like that's what you got with the L-48 and the BW came with the L-82.

That's interesting. Thanks again Gary.
