Default Strut Rods

I am trying to remove the strut rods off of a 78. I have the ends off that have the camber markings on them but I cant get the end near the wheels off? I have already damaged the threads on them so they will have to be replaced anyways. Does anyone know of a good way to get these off. I have already tried beating the hell out of them and got no where.

The shock mounts can be a bear. Try a big C-clamp so the ears don't spread apart, soak everything with PB or your favorite penetrating oil and beat some more. If that won't work, it's sawzall time. Don't try and twist them out- the holes are both splined and D shaped to keep the shocks in correct alignment.

My book says to use a tie rod seperator but that makes no sense to me, I was thinking about the C-Clamp idea then realized that I have a ball joint press that I might be able to configure to work, thanks for the help.

I did this not to long ago. Its a tuff job. Tried a hack saw, then sawzall, then I had to finally use a 4 inch rotor grinder/cuter. I had to make 4 cuts used two grinding/cutting wheels. Take a propane torch and burn out the rubber bushings on each side, this way you can get the blade in their to cut them out.
Other methods , I tried that did not work, was using a pusher/puller, soaking in PB blaster for days, and beating it. But be careful you can break the mount, then your $30 shock mount bolt has turned into a $150 + fix or more. If ya need some pics let me know.
Also if your going this far, replace with adjustable strut rods.

Good luck on getting the mounts out ; they can be "frustrating "
I bought a set of adjustable strut rods from Mid-America with
urethane bushings. Mine came out pretty easy I think and for re-install a light coating of "silver" anti-seize works really slick .
A light wipe on wheel studs helps prevent galling of their threads without changing torque values.

I ended up cutting off the bracket where the shock mounts and was then able tp put a ball joint press over it and then just cranked it down, it took a little bit of torque but the whole process took no more than ten minutes. I strongly reccomened this to anyone about to change out there struts.
