... between the fuel line & return line on top of the frame in the right rear wheel well? You wouldn't believe the caked in dried up solid packed MUD that I found in there! Especially since my car still had the factory shim tape on the rear body mounts. :yesnod: I'm working on wirebrushing & restoring everything in sight while the rear suspension / drivetrain is out of the car & up at Tony's for overhaul. At first I thought I might have to replace the fuel lines, but to my surprise they actually wire brushed up pretty well! :)
...which got me to thinking - what other obscure areas of your car have you detailed lately? I thought it might be fun to see what little nooks and crannies you've spent hours detailing. :seeya
When my 79 was being dismantled we found everything from large stones to cigarette butts inside the transmission crossmember. Only god knows how that stuff get's in there.
I did a body lift on Jan 26th - I also found things I couldn´t believe......
From Stones to grommets for the luggage carrier, from cigarette ends (honestly!!!) to mud and debris parts to bolts and even a screwdriver - everything there!!
Juliet, whats even more interesting is the fuel lines in the passenger corner above the reinforcement metal on the frame. Mud, dirt, grease and so on will collect there and will enclose the fuel lines. Whenever this mud gets wet again it will moisten the fuel lines and let them rust properly.
I already found two 79 Vettes where this happened! One time it happened on holidays in Italy to a friend - we drove the car on the mesh that covers the holes for a basements window (dont know how to describe any better) and I went inside the house and from downstairs I cut the fuel line and replaced the piece with a rubber hose.
Even in my 77 which I thought was a very clean car the dirt had enclosed the fuel lines!!! Nothing from the line in this area was visible.......
Also like you said, in the RH whell well the lines are also often dirt covered, but interesting, there they dont rust, only in the spot I described I found major damaging rust to the lines.
I just recently overhauled the insides of both of my doors. Besides the dirt and assorted leafs, I found washers and what looked to be the original lock cylinder clip (pass. side). Now that it is all cleaned up, it doesn't sound like my doors are going to fall apart when I close them!!
Here's an easy one for everyone to try. Go after the holes in your frame. First shoot in some cleaner, followed by a pressurized water hose. See what comes out the other end!! I had all kinds of mud, gravel, and other crud. MJ
