Default Fuel Line Novice Needs Help

if you have been keeping up with my posts you know by now I am in the middle of what started out to be just a little detailing in the engine bay of my 71 roadster. You know how it goes with these things, take one thing off and find 2 more to do! Now it's fuel lines. Last night I noticed the lines connecting pump to fram lines are dry and cracked, as well as Lar's told me I needed to get rid of an in line filter by the tank. So, here are the ques.

1. I have a full tank of gas. Any hints on how to take out the in line filter on the bottom of the tank without spilling major quantities of gas on me?
2. Of the 2 lines on the pump, one is 3/8". What size is the smaller one?
3. When I take off the old lines from the pump, will gas drain through them from the tank? Kind of the same issue as the filter.

As always, thanks for all the great advice. I couldn't do this without you guys!

Well, this is just me and the way I do things. But, I don't like working on the low side of a gas tank that has gas in it. I'd siphon out (from the top) as much as I could, put it in another car, whatever. Then disconnect at the bottom and drain out the rest.

And yes, when you disconnect from the fuel filter the tank will drain - big time, unless you have emptied the tank or pinched off the rubber "s" line near the fuel pump.

1. Sorry, I haven't had to do that & can't picture how it's set up.
2. The smaller size should be 5/16".
3. My 69 has 2 hard lines that run forward along the passenger side frame roughly up to the area of the fuel pump and that's where the soft lines begin. I just replaced the soft lines a few days ago & yes- you will have fuel drainage. I worked on 1 line at a time & made a plug of sorts from a short piece of fuel line w/ a bolt screwed into one end to block the flow of fuel. I disconnected the old fuel line from the hard line and quickly put my plug in place. Then I removed the other end of the old line & cut a new piece to length.
You'll still end up w/ some drainage when you swap the new line on but it shouldn't be too bad if you can swap it on quickly. Hope this helps.

Thanks for the tips. I might try the siphon and plug route. Will let you know how it turns out.
