Default Timing and Compression

I read timing specs and follow them to a T. I set my timing and then check my total timing and it is way out. I am going to replace the distributor because I have already changed the springs and it is still way out. I bought this 1980 Corvette this March I have documents say it has only 17,000 miles on it and it shows like that is true, but I noticed RTV on the oil pan, but no where else. I checked the compression and all cylinders are at 215 lbs. I spoke with a mechanic and he said that seems high for a stock motor. I thought that maybe one of the three previous owners put a cam in it, but there is no RTV on the timing chain cover. When I set the timing and go run the car I have value ping. When I retard the timing I get rid of the ping but I have to retard it a lot. So the car falls on its face at acceleration. Please let me know what you think. Thanks Kevin

That is a lot of cranking compression for that motor.
With 215 lbs of compression and a small cam you will have trouble finding a happy spot for your timing. Someone is bound to have changed the cam, or at least advanced the stock one.

something seems wrong.... when mine was stock (L82) 1979, i had a compression of about ~150..... currently running 10.5-1 and static compression is 190.... but static compression also is effected by cam specs... my new cam is about~.55 lift and duration ~240 @50*
hope that helps...

What is the total advance? Should be around 36*. Sounds like someone has increased the compression, either with different pistons or heads.

The total timing is about 50. This is a L48 numbers matching engine. I pulled all the spark plugs out before I checked the compression. I was told by a mechanic to do that. If there was a cam put in the engine ,it has to be a small one because it has no lope to it.

Total timing is initial plus centrifugal, no vacuum advance. With vacuum advance it should be about 52. Is this about what you are seeing? What octane gas are you using?
