Default Please help with interior light problem.

Just restored my whole interior on my 1981 corvette. I changed everything but left the wiring completely alone. Just checked and all the fuses are good. I turn the interior light switch and everything works great. headlight turn on, speedometer and tachometer, all of the center bezel lights work and glove compartment light turn on. Only problem is the every time i go to turn the courtesy lights and dome light on the fuse burns out. re did the wiring to the dome light for as far as i could see but still burn the fuse. What could it be?
Thanks

Your gauge lights and other lights are seperate from teh interior footwell and dome light. So if they work...that is great but theya re on another circuit...so they are not the problem.

Your courtsey lights ( footwell lights, dome light, glove box, cigarette lighter, horn relay...and many other items are powered by this fuse.

SO if they work ( the interior lights) when you open the door(s)...and the fuse does not blow...BUT the fuse blows when you TURN the headlight switch to make them come on...then your problem is in the headlight switch.

Your description is a bit "confusing"...because you stated "when you go to turn on the interior lights". They should already be ON if the doors are opened.

You will have CONSTANT power (through the courtsey/clock fuse) to the light sockets for your interior ( the orange wire). The white wire is the ground wire that is controlled by your door jamb switches and headlight switch. These signals pass through your interior light delay timer ( which is located by your glove box...usually an orange box...about the size of two match boxes).

IN order for the fuse to blow...the orange wire must be coming in contact with ground...or you are overlaoding the circuit ...the fuse should be 20 amp.

Hopefully this helps...if not you can call me and I will be glad to help you ...as long as you can be at your car so I can have you test circuits with a test light or a volt/ohm meter.
"DUB" (704) 394-5150 EST I will be at the shop today 10-24-2009 ...for a while if you need me. IF I am not ..leave your phone number...if you choose to do so... and I will call you back.
