Default muncie tailshaft questions

Hey out there! I have a question: what's the difference from a #3857584 tailshaft last used on a 70 Vette, and a #3978764 tailshaft used from 71 thru 74 Vettes? Thanks!!!

Looks like 27 spline vs 32 spline.

Thanks for the info Duke. I was under the impression that all muncies after 70 were the 32 spline, so I was thinking the difference was in shifter mounting or something like that. Should I be thinking the only difference- and spline count is a BIG difference- is the spline count, and not shifter mounting?
I can use a 27 spline muncie if I just get a driveshaft with 27 splines, it seems to me. Duh. And if there is any difference in shifter mounting, I should be able to get the right plate to adapt the earlier tail. Right?

I copied that page you sent me about casting numbers and thanks again!

I agree, I don't understand why the spline count would change the tailshaft housing. There has to be some other change also.

The yoke diameter increased in 71 as did the bushing. The 71 is the diameter of the pre 70s 400 turbo yokes.

Thanks Roger! Here's what I also found out after looking at my Volunteer Corvette catalog: shifter brackets are the same from 68 to 82, so one would have to say the mounting bosses on the tailshaft are the same. You all have been great!
