I am replacing the valve stem seals on my 71 SB Coupe and am having problems getting the o ring seals to stay in place when I put the spring back on. The service manual says to install the seal before the spring, but I have seen some people online who say to compress the spring and then put the seal on followed by the keepers.. Which way is correct?
I want to make sure they are on correctly and dont leak..

Compress the spring and retainer first then the seal and thean the keeper. The seal is there to seal oil from runinng doem through the keepers. Also ,be sure and keep the metal cups over the spring to. They are there to keep oil splash off the guide when the valve is opened.
Are you just replacing the o-rings? I'd install Perfrct Circle seals along with the o-rings. Pull the springs, use the little sleeve on the end of the valve, slide the PC seal down and push it over the end of the guide, spring, shield, and retainer, o-ring and keepers.
SOme will tell you that the ends of the guides need to be turned down to fit PC seals, but I've never found and later model guides that PC seals didn't fit. And by later model I'm saying post 1967.
I am pretty sure I have it correct now.. I bought a c type spring compressor from Sears and it is a lot easier than the one I rented from Autozone.
So just so I have it correct, I am removing the old seal, placing an umbrella seal on the stem, followed by the spring/cap, comress the spring and install the o ring followed by the keepers.. Correct?
