I just had my differential rebuilt, nothing fancy just needed to be done. Sametime I had it all out I replaced all the rotting bushings to include the trailer arms. I also had the trailer arms bearings replaced , by a shop. Put the same shims back in that I took out exactly. As I was putting it all back together I noticed I really had to pull the trailers arms in to get the half shaft joint and the spindle joint to join up. Is it suppose to be that much tension between the halfshaft u joint and the spindle u joint? It all joined up flush but only after I tightened down the half and spindle joint bolts.
I have now noticed also that there is a tinging noise from the left rear, when you first accelerate from a stop or when startng in reverse. the tinging is not there when driving only if you initially take of from a stop. Anyone ever heard of this. I almost want to say either the ujoint, bearings packed wrong/too tight, or a brake problem.

Impossible to say what the problem is. If the trailing arm bushings were replaced you should get an alignment. The shims you replaced may have been compensating for worn trailing arm bushings so you might be placing stress on the arms by using the same shim arrangement.
Not all shops are equal when it comes to rebuilding Vette trailing arms. The bearings need to be set up very carefully and with close tolerances in order to work correctly.
Noises have proven to be very hard to diagnose over the Internet. They are very open to interpretation and almost no 2 explanations are the same.
I would respectfully suggest that you find a shop that is experienced in C3s and have them put your car on a lift and have a look. I replaced the trailing arm bearings in mine over the winter, and the existing shims weren't close to being the right thickness, on either side. Ditto the alignment shims in the frame pocket--I put in new shims to match the thickness of the old ones I removed, and it wasn't right.
As far as the tinging noise, does it correspond to the rotation of the wheel, or is it more frequent? In other words, could the tings correspond to the (gulp) ring & pinion? I drove a car once that had lost all it's gear oil from the rearend and been run for a while. It pinged real loud in reverse, as those poor scoured gears tried to mesh...
