I got a set of new door locks for the 68. I have everything disconnected from the lock but can't get it out of the door. The bolts on top won't fit down thru the holes to let it out. Is there a trick to this?
Are you speaking of the 2 studs that stick out of the push-button assembly? If so you have to tilt it down as you pull back so it clears the mounting tab in the door frame as the push-button clears the opening in the door.
It takes a bit of finessing but it can be done. You may have to bend the door frame plate up a tad for the studs to clear.
Yes Tom the two studs that stick out of the lock assembly. They just won't clear the mounting tab. Of course when I have to depress the push-button to clear the opening on the door, the Pawl-Bolt then comes out the back and hits the lock paddle and won't let me slide it down as necessary to clear the studs of the mounting tab. Here's a pic.
I may have to bend that mounting tab but it goes ALL the way across the door handle. That looks like ALOT of bending and it still has to get back to original angle so the lock is straight in the hole.
I was thinking of just cutting a slot to let the studs slide out. The shim that was in there will hold it in place when it is put back together, I would think.
The paddle you're referring to is part of the latch assembly. Pull the 3 screws that hold it in the door and let it drop down. That will give you way more room to get the lock cylinder out.
My left door was the hardest one to get out, the right door one slipped right out. I just had to put a little upward pressure on the left door mounting tab to get it out.
That doesn't look like primer, perhaps you have a door off of a blue car? Was your car blue at one time?

1Fordman,
There are no 3 screws, it is attatched with large rivets. Guess I will have to go with my plan B above.
I believe that it is the original doors on the car. It was repainted (by 2 owners ago) but it was repainted with original color. Paint code matches.
I just checked the illustration section of the parts manual for 68 and it shows the latch held to the door with screws. Mine has screws and I went out and looked at a spare set of 68 latches in the garage and they have the countersunk phillips head screws in them.
I'm surprised your latch is held in with rivets. Newer vehicles use rivets but I don't think that method was used in 68.
The door latch assembly should be held in place with three chrome Phillip head screws. I've never seen one with rivets holding it in.
In the AIM for the 68 car there is a sheet with instructions on how to install the outer push assembly. I looked at it and I don't see this as being much help to you. If you don't have this page, let me know... I'll put it up for you.
Thanx Willcox I have the page and AIM. You're right it isn't a lot of help.
I am probably mistaken about the rivets. What I am looking at is probably the construction of the pawl/lock paddle assy. I will look again for the 3 screws.
will report back later with results. If you have a pic showing the three screws it would help.
I never said I was a rocket scientist
Okay I took the door latch off and the lock assy. fell out into my hand. Boy is that door latch ever dirty. soaking in varsol right now.
Thanx for all the help. I will ask for help on the window mechanism when I start on it next. I'm going to gut the whole door and fix/replace/clean everything on the inside as needed. (Willcox get ready for an order)
I'm going to start a x-mas thread too... Duboy is not around any longer so I thought I'd do it! A few weeks from now... Idea's?
Ernie
Of course. A pair of 68-82 Power Window Regulator Assemblies part #'s 604461 & 604462
Seriously though: I think the CRC (the BEST) weather stripping is always a good winter seller. I know I was VERY happy when I got mine from you. Front end parts always popular aren't they?
