Fuel pump rod ??
I have a ticking on the passenger side of my 454. It's not a lifter and I suspect the gasket at the heat riser valve OR the fuel pump rod. In the past I had a small block that sounded like it dropped a lifter but it was the fuel pump rod.
Someone suggested that I replace the stock FP rod with a brass tip fuel pump rod. This engine has a hyd flat tappet Comp 260 camshaft. I wondered of the brass tip rod is a good or bad idea?

Thanks....
You shouldnt need a brass tip rod for a flat tappet cam. Stick with a factory or lightweight aftermarket piece.
If you suspect the fuel pump rod of the ticking start the engine to fill the carb and then shut it off, remove the pump mounting bolts leaving all the lines attached , pull the pump up and out a little and allow the rod to drop, start the engine and see if the ticking is still there.
That's a pretty hefty piece of steel. I'm having a hard time imagining how it could get bent.
They will bend pretty easy if someone while installing the pump doesn't get the rod up and then tightens the bolts down. The rod is pretty soft and I believe only about half is up in the block.
The "real bender" that I have run into is when some guys use the bolt through the front of the block method to hold the rod up they tighten the bolt with a wrench. The reason they use a wrench is the hole is usually full of gunk and the bolt cant get to the rod to hold it,thats why I recommend removing the 1st 1/2" of threads from the bolt you are using to hold the rod up.Here is a pic of the tool I use to hold the rod up using only finger tight pressure.
