How loud are the spherical rod ends? I would think that they have to make more noise than the poly. Are these something that you have made yourself and where did you pick them up at?

I've had Guldstrand rods in my car since the last century some time. I've driven it a few thousand miles. I have made a number of trips over 100 miles each way.
Believe me, with 550 lb front springs, wide sticky tires, poly bushings and side exhaust the rear strut rods are minor.

And the keep the rear end where it belongs around corners!

Not sure what you mean by loud, but there is no noise over the stock rubber whatsoever.

They are absolutely tight, yet move a lot more freely than the originals.

Ordered all the stuff from Speedway, right around a 100 bucks. These are the good heims.
Had to make stainless spacers, but I also used the seals for the joints.
Also added the nut to the tube to make it a bit easier to tighten.
A worthwhile mod.

Here are the part numbers.

Ooooh. I wondered if there were REAL suspension parts out there... not just poly bushed, welded joint crap. Definitely checking out Speedway!

This Guldstrand "smart-strut" setup has been on my '73 since the early 90's. I was modifying the suspension at the time for autocross and they have worked well all of these years with no noticeable "noise" that I can determine.

Good luck... GUSTO

I just did mine the other day, actually still tweaking the toe alignment. The tubes I used were AFCO 19513 (13"), joints were Competition Engineering 6133/6155. I also had stainless bushings made for spacers. Overall a very heavy duty looking strut.

I posted some pics on my website on the Suspension page, but I'm not done yet with the project.

Here's a few pictures.

Mine are made of hex chromemoly, very strong. Heim joints and spacers keep it all aligned properly.

Thanks for the info It all seems pretty straight forward, but I'm not sure what to do about the spacers. Do you just use stainless tubing and cut it down to size? Where do you get the materials to make them or order them?

I just used pipe, drilled it out to size and rough cut it to length and then filed it to fit. Any metal shop would carry this stuff. You only need a small peice, just ask for a peice of scrap pipe.

Thanks for the info on this one. I put my order together using the same parts shown in the pic and it comes up to $135 or so. Anyone have a discount code to use?

I found these stainless spacers online. Pretty inexpensive, shipped right away too. I still needed to fab spacers, but these fit nicely to the rod end bearing.

Awesome, thanks

Got one last question, why did you go with 5/8" bore on one end and 1/2" bore on the other? And do you have a source for grade 8 bolts to fasten them?

1/2 " is the size of the camber bolt and 5/8" is the size of the strut/shock mount.

I just ordered the parts from summit, the P/N's are below. Not bad for a custom set of strut rods, I can't wait to assemble and install these. This was a great post, thanks to all who contributed the info Summit says the afco rods are on back order till the 27th but I'm not in a hurry.

Part # Item Cost Qty
AFC-19513 SWAGED STEEL TUBE $11.95 2 $23.90
CEE-6133 ROD END $19.95 1 $19.95
CEE-6155 ROD END $19.95 2 $39.90
SIT-WS5001 ROD END SEALS 6 PACK $11.95 1 $11.95
SIT-WS6250 ROD END SEALS 6 PACK $13.95 $13.95
Total $109.65

Am I reading this incorrectly or did you only order 3 rod ends?
