79 vette L-82 350 with four speed with 67,800 miles.
cranked up engine last week heard noise shut engine down checked fluids all was good re cranked engine checked oil pressure 60 to 65lbs idle fast idle 80lbs.
noise sounds like ball pin hammer taping and bouncing on steel beam
inside the car it sounds like an exhaust leak or maybe a valve clacking.
I'm no mechanic be any stretch I'm also hard of hearing and wear hearing aids so the sound might be some what different to someone with good hearing.
would appreicate your thoughts.
Do you still have the flap valve hooked up for the heat riser? the valve that is on the passenger side exhaust manifold. When the rod falls off the valve clatters..

Do what my grandfather use to do. If the engine is running OK with no miss and just the noise, take out your hearing aids when you drive it. (hey, I just couldn't resist).
More than likely it's your heat riser. They rust and fall apart and the flapper valve inside the pipe starts "flappin'" and makes a lot of noise. Do what I did and pull the valve off and take out the shaft and butterfly flapper thing and reinstall. Problem solved.

Sorry I didn't see the header thing in time. But, you could have a collapsed lifter if your car hasn't been started in a few months. After sitting, the oil in the lifters can bleed off and at start up, they pump right back up. You may have one that isn't pumping up. It happened to me in the spring of '77 when I took my '72 out of storage. Sounded terrible. I thought for sure it was a broken rocker arm or pushrod, but after warming up, the noise went away and it hasn't happened since.
Start her up and let it sit and run for a few minutes and see if the noise disappears. Good luck! Hope that's it.

mostly we describe header leaks as ticking noise......possibly recheck all the header bolts.....also you could isolate several systems by diconnecting the fan belts and see if the noise goes away....i would not run the car long like this but a moment or two i dont think would hurt anything on a cold engine. also you could pull the spark plugs and pull the power feed to the distributor and crank the engine and see what you hear.....it may point you to a particular cylinder

I tried that the other day I ran it for a little while about 10 minites or so but I was concerend about causeing more damage to the engine.

well you could get a set of old valve covers and cut the top out and watch the valves open and close when the car is running and that would definitely tell you if its a valve train issue. dont try this unless you put a valve cover on it or the oil will get everywhere

Checked header bolts found front two on passenger side of engine were loose. I will clean the covers install new gaskets and button her up tomorrow and give her a run. I feel confident that your suggestion was right on.
[QUOTE=bobs77vet;1572118592]good job let us know how it sounds[/QU
tighten hesder bolts installed covers cranked engine noise still there let idle while I checked cover gaskets noise stopped, went on a good coutrty drive 50 miles or so return no noise.
cranked it up this morning noise there warmed it up and did a fast idle for a couple of minutes noise gone.
I think it might be what someone suggested a lifter bleeding off.
