I had to get to the cancelling cam on my 79. Im putting it back together but have run into an issue. The way I took the retainer for the shaft out doesnt work for putting it back in. Is there a way to depress that spring enough to install the retainer that someone knows? There must be an easier way than Im trying. Its driving me nuts!

Have someone push the locking plate in while you slip the retainer in...It can be done.Or use the tool.
You need to lock the upper shaft from sliding when you use the locking plate compresser tool. You will need to first install the star screw and lock the upper shaft. If the star screw interferes with the compresser tool you will need to use a 5/16-18 UNC set screw or a #20 allen screw to lock the upper shaft.
Then the tool will work correctly.

Well it worked. Though I was so ready to get it together I used a predrilled driveshaft loop bracket and 2 bolts and nuts and it went down perfect. haha thanks guys!
