Default Engine Code unrecognized

I am trying to decode an engine code in a 1971 Corvette with the Suffix of C7F. I cannot find this in any of the books I have. Does anyone know what this code refers to. This is stamped on the Boss on the front passenger side of the engine. The complete number is C7F40888.

Tried a few sites to find this as well and it is a mystery so far. Are you sure of the stampings??

That's not a code from 1971 or any similar year. Most likely a recent-ish GM crate engine. What's the casting number and date on the block?

The first 3 should all be letters. Are you sure the second is a 7?

Not correct. Original engines have one letter followed by a series of numbers, followed by the two or three letter engine code.

GM Targetmaster engines have a stamping sequence very similar to the OP's, that's probably what it is.
