I need to pull my stock shifter out for a rebuild.
Before I get started are their any tips on how to remove the shifter from the car with the transmission in place?
Car has side pipes so exhaust is not in the way.
Thanks
Steve
I remove **** and T,remove the reverse light linkage, remove the 3 levers from trans , remove the mount and lower the trans , push reverse lever back and remove short bolt, then unscrew long bolt and leave bolt in shifter and slide shifter down and out.
I forgot you will have to loosen the 2 bolts on the back of the crossmember holding the shifter support and maybe a couple more that hold the trans mount bracket so everything will be loose enough to move the shifter support towards the pass side of the car to get a wrench up inside.
I think I have on occasion been able to wrench the long bolt out without loosening everything up but can't remember why on certain cars.
Its tight up in there. You also might want to get your tool for alignment made to fit while the shifter is out.
I put the car up in the air, removed the two longer shift rods (1-2)
(3-4) supported the trans, pulled out the trans mount bracket and mount and removed all bolts from the shifter support bracket.
Basically everything that can be removed is removed.
I also removed the short bolt holding the shifter to the support, only thing left to do is remove the last bolt holding the shifter to the support and it should fall out.
you're correct about it being tight in there!
I'll bet it's a major pain if the exhaust is under the car.
Maybe I can finish the job tomorrow, wife intervened today and you know how that goes.
