Default 68 rear end gears

Thinking about changing the rear end gears instead of the TKO tranny. (maybe later for the tranny) What gears will fit in the '68? I'm running 3.70's right now and thinking of going to at least 3.08's or even higher if possible. Also is there anything else I need besides the gears? Maybe rebuild the posi?

Mike, what tranny and motor are in your '68? I have a BB with lots of torque and was wondering if the 3.08's would be okay with the M21 4 speed.

The current gear ratios available without changing the carrier are : 2.72, 3.08, 3.36, 3.55, 3.70, 3.90, 4.11(thick), 4.33(thick) Its also a good idea to at least change the bearings as well as the clutch pack while you are overhauling the differential.

I hate to say it but your 1st gear of 2.20 is going to be a dog with 3.08s in there. You can probably do 70 mph in 1st gear though. I don't care how much torque you have. Your 1st gear of 6.77 is going to be rough. Take what you have now M21 and 3.70 and strat driving around without using 1st gear. Start off in 2nd gear and that is about the same multiplication and 3.08s and 2.2 1st gear.

My 69 has the TKO600 2.87 1st gear and I'm running 3.08's in the rear and I want a little more pull off the line, maybe 3.55's or 3.70's.

You're correct that the multiplication in 2nd gear is close (6.78 vs 6.07). I never thought of looking at it in that manner. I have driven my car starting out in 2nd gear. As long as I am NOT in a hurry it is not a problem at all. Have actually done it unintentionally. BUT, if I want to launch it it wants to burn the clutch very bad. If that's what 3.08's are going to do then they are NOT what I want.

If I go to the 3.36 then my cruising rpm will still be up around 2800rpm and that it not good enuf of a gain to change out the gears. The 3.55 of course would be even worse.

So it's back to the OD tranny and saving more of those elusive $$$. I've been off work for 6 months so it won't happen this winter. Just have to put up with it for another year and plan (and save) for it next winter.

Thanx EVERYONE for your help.

Clutch life would be severly shortened also as you would have to slip the clutch a lot more to get moving. With my setup I can almost let the clutch out with no throttle. Mine is a little on the other side of thechart for 1st gear but I like it.
