Default Astro ventilation operation

I am in the process of changing carpeting in my 1971 non air converible.
First all on my headlights and wipe door operate fine. Redplaced all hose under the hood 3 years ago just to clean up the apperance had no problems.
My question is what makes the rear damper open. When does it open and if it does not what should I look for???

I'm pretty sure the astrovent vac hoses go through the heater thumb wheel controls. On my car the routing is a combination of rubber hoses connected to a copper tube that goes across behind the seats and then back to rubber hose to the actuator on the rear vents. I'm not sure of when they operate but is based upon a thumb wheel control position.

Correct. The temp wheel must be at full cold and the other wheel must be away from the off position to open the rear vent.

Yes there is a copper line going up to what looks like a pressure disk.
Also back when I took center consel apart I remember the hoses connected to the wheels and they are in place and where in good shape.

As others have said, the thumb wheel on the console opens it. The vac tube runs alone the right hand wheel well.
