Default Tame the side pipes?

Had to have the side exhaust. Love the look and sound, but it's a bit loud. What's the best way to tame the tone a bit? Just off the top of my mind, maybe a set of cherry bombs behind the exhaust covers? Haven't looked to see if it's possible.

If it's too loud, then you're too old! I had to say it! I'm just kidding. I had to remove side pipes from my 68 many years ago for the same reason. I have seen some custom set-ups, but never using stock type side pipes. Maybe some cherry bombs on the pipe before the 90 degree bend to side pipe? Good luck!

I was able to fit a short pair of glasspacks between the manifold and OEM sidepipes with the original SBC. When I went to the LS motor, I used the Sweet Thunder from the link below. They were quieter than my original setup.

Excellent thanks. Any experience with the STS baffles?

STS baffles in my Hooker sidepipes. Comfortable at cruise, can listen to the radio or talk to the passenger (but I do have a Tremec OD). Nice roar at WOT.

Ultimate solution:

Did some reading, but couldn't find info on how much noise reduction, 3db, 6db? Etc from the STS. How much difference do they make?

So, haven't looked, but somehow my factory side pipes slide apart and allow me to insert the STS baffles? Did some googling, but didn't find any reports of how much quiteter it is. I love the sound now, just not wanting it that loud.

If you have 69 style OEM sidepipes, the STS wont fit. The covers dont allow you to swap out the original pipes for aftermarket glasspacks.
The addition of a short glasspack between the maifold and muffler did help a little. But the sweet thunders were quieter than the glasspack/OEM muffler combo.

My 69 has the Factory Style Side Pipe Covers. I used Heddman side-exit headers. I bought 1 Cherry Bomb,1 90 degree bend & 1 turndown for each side. I also bought a stick of 2.5 in. tubing.
The Mufflers fit fine under the covers. I know "loud" is a relative term, but I like it. Actually, I was surprised how quiet it is. If it would be too loud for someone, there is room for 2 mufflers end to end.
Also, this system is EXTREMELY inexpensive to replace.

What diameter cherry bombs? I was going to do the same thing but all the glasspacks I found rattled against the frame or covers, or were visible below the covers.

How do you compare that setup to the stock side exhausts in terms of performance? .. I bought my car with a set of factory side exhausts but they were VERY restrictive, when I switched to the under-car setup, I thought I gained back 50 HPs or so.

Ok hear is a sugestion: Side pipes should be loud and I had the thought of maintaining a back to bumper system with side pipes added. My thought is you could install the electric accuated cut outs (a little pricey) that would turn off the side pipes and turn on the stock system. Then you have the best of both. You can be quite and look cool with side pipes and with a quick selection make them loud.

Has anyone ever done this. If the stock system is tucked up nicely with some short turndown tips you would hever notice the dual system.

Would do well for weight.

I didn't know there were different diameter Cherry Bombs. The Parts Store where I bought these (Auto Zone) also had Thrush Glass Packs. These did not look like the Thrush Glass Packs I remember from ths 70's.
These looked identical to Cherry Bombs.(Red) They were both available in different lengths, but the diameter appeared the same. They were also available with different size inlet & outlet, 2 in, 2.25, 2.5 etc.
As for performance, the only thing I have to compare to is open headers. Driving around the neighborhood with open headers and then with functioning side exhaust, my seat of the pants Butt-O-Meter says the car SEEMS to have more power WITH the exhaust.
I have seen alot lately, on this site & others that under car exhaust systems can be made to provide more power than side exhaust systems.
Especially the FACTORY side exhaust systems. They seem to have a reputation for being VERY restrictive.

I'm running the 2.5" Sweet Thunders in my side pipes that are modified with 2" adapters on the inlet.

That small modification helped a lot but there is room for improvement.

I've been thinking of adding the CC inserts into the header collector as well.

Anyone ever use these?

Seem like they can reduce the noise a substantial amount, 7db. Look like they don't hurt HP too much either. AND much cheaper than the SFS baffels.
