Default Floppy Mirror !!!

any way or tricks to tighten up the D. Side mirror ??? It's the ball joint at the mirror housing that won't stay put !! hit a bump or get up over about 50 and it folds down

Clean with brake parts cleaner, add some red Loctite to ball/socket: VOILA! stuck mirror You need to adjust before locktite sets up and readjusting can cause it to get loose again but, cheaper fix than $50 mirror.

The only thing I can think of is to adjust mirror to your liking and run some super gule around ball. This will lock mirror in place but will not be permanent. It might also close up the looseness as superglue is basically liquid plastic. mds...

I am having the same issue. Great timing. I was thinking about a bead of clear silicone around the ball after confirming the correct mirror position. (bubba)

It's funny, I wasn't bothered by adjusting the mirror everytime I closed it (no tops, windows down all summer). Now that it's colder, and I'm driving with the windows up and the tops on it's a bother to say the least.

The weather looks grim through thanksgiving, I'll do the removal of the mirror and increase the ball and socket resistance.

Thanks

When soaking off the mirror glass I would recommend using lacquar thinner as the solvent. My glass just fell off after 5 hours of soaking. It's safer than using gasoline also.

Silicone doesn't work well, I've tried it. Good call on the laquer thinner, it should also work better than gas.

I used this technique and it has been great. My biggest problem was wedging the shim under the rivet. I used a small washer with about 1/4 cut out. I eventually tapped it in with a small screwdriver. I did use gasoline to disslove the silicone, and it took a long time.

Very tight mirror now, Very good, and easy, solution.

I have been using this method successfully for many years. I did have a problem a couple years ago with a mirror where the rivet popped off when I tried to slide the shim underneath it. The cure was to run a tap in the hole and then install a short metal screw. I seem to recall that it was a 6-32 or a 8-32 screw about 1/4 " long.

Last but not least, use either the red or the black RTV as stated earlier. Gasoline and lacquer thinner will work to dissolve both of them. The last thing you want if you ever need to remove the glass again is to not be able to dissolve the adhesive.
