The inside rear view mirror is loose in the ball & socket portion of the stem that connects to the windshield frame. Because it has a map light (that works!!) AND I can't find a decent one online, what is the best way to tighten the ball & socket.
I had one that someone had put oil on it. I kept working brake clean inside and that fixed it.
I wonder if you could with a light hammer very lightly peen the case around the ball tighter ?
I would go ahead and get a newer rear view mirror out of something like a Blazer or Cobalt or something along those lines.
You can get it cheap at the junk yard and it will be perfect, has great lines-styling to it, and will still have your map light if you need it. You'll only need to hook up power as the new GM mirro rwill mount right up to a original Vette GM mirror FOB on the windshield.
If you want to spend a little more coin, you can get the aftermarket kits that have the compass and external temperature set-up that you can retrofit to your car.
I did a late 90s Sunfire mirror. Its nice and solid, absolutely perfect sizing, and cost me $5 IIRC.
Update....I took the plastic cover off the top part of the mirror that covers the stem to the frame and exposed the ball and bracket like in the picture. I took off the black bracket, laid it on my work bench (curve facing down) then rapped it with a hammer a couple of times, somewhat "straightened" out the curve just a little then reattached it to the mirror bracket. I also cleaned the ball really good. After all that, the mirror works PERFECTLY...tight and everything! Thanks!
