Default Electrical problems on 1980

I just had someone change the cam in my 1980, 350 and when I got the car back the voltage gauge was reading about 17 volts and the warning light was on, so I changed my alternator, thought my alternator just crapped out.
After replacing the alternator I cranked the car and the gauge was reading 12 volts, but all of my lights in the car and headlights were blinking. I took the car down the road and the guage started going from 12 to pegged out and back and the battery started to smell like rotten eggs, my lights were still blinking except when it would peg out to 18 volts and then they were really bright and didnt blink.
Is it possible that I have another bad alternator or what can the problem be?? The voltage regulator is internal on this model, so if that is the problem I will need another alternator.

Any help is appreciated.

If the alternator was functioning correctly before the cam change, I would check the wiring and make sure it was reconnected properly

you have a ground wire problem on the alternator.
