What Non-original Trannys will work??
I am curious as to what non-Corvette transmissions will fit well and work with a Vette. I have a '71 that originally had an auto transmission, but I want to convert it to a manual (5 or 6 speed preferrably....and inexpensively 
)
I have seen many postings about things that can be converted from other GM cars to enhance the Vettes...from Fiero seats to Firebird headlight actuators, to rack and pinion from a Grand Prix.
So, I was wondering what transmissions from other GM cars would be the best match and least headache to install in a Vette. Thanks in advance....

sorry, inexpensively is not going to happen. If you have nothing for the conversion to start with you are looking at $1,500 to 4,500 to make it happen. I just went through the fact and price gathering on this conversion. Repairs to wife and daughters cars ate my cash stash. Looks kind of like this:
transmission 600 to 3000 depending on 4-5-6 gears and condition
flywheel 150 to 350
Bell housing 100 to 300
clutch and pressure plant 150 to 300
Pedal assembly and brackets 300 to 500
cross member (depending on trans) 100 to 200
Shifter 100 to 300
There are always misc parts that come up also you may need different drive shaft. Most of this stuff is heavy so shipping will drop several bills. I'm not trying to talk you out of it, I still hope to make the swap. Just be prepared and don't let your other cars know you have cash.

What about the 5spd or 6spd conversion kits? The 5spd is about 4.5k to convert from auto to manual and suppose to come with everything you need. The 6spd requires more modification to the car.
As for cheap.. good luck. I am going to do the 200r4 swap because its budget friendly but still will cost me...
