Default hood clearance question

Thanks in advance for your help
I am building a 383 and am trying to choose a manifold. I will be using the Q-Jet and am ok with a "low profile" type air cleaner.
How do you confirm you have a L88 hood. The person I bought the car from said it was, but I need to make sure before I make a descision on the manifold.
Also, I am open to any suggestions for the build.
1975 original 350, 373 gears, 400 tranny, double hump heads, stock Q-jet carb, Eagle stroker kit, true duals without cats, not sure about which headers yet.

My goal is a nice reliable driver on pump gas with app 400 hp
I know matching components is the secret, my biggest questions are the hood clearance (manifold) cam, manifold and headers

You could post a pic. of your Vette & we can tell if it has a L-88 hood or you can look at other pics.

Med. rise 73-79 hood is only 7/8" lower than L-88 hood & all of these allow cowl induction.

To run the Q-J, you need an air filter that fits w/ hi rise intakes or the low rise Performer like 2101 will even work w/ stock air cleaner.

The 73-79 med. rise hood allows the hi rise intakes like Victor Jr, RPMs & others on SB w/ aftermarket dropbase filter & Holley.

I tried to post a pick but they are too big (12 mega pix) and I cannot figure out how to post it.
my hood it looks like the yellow one below.
change of plans though, I will be going with typhoon manifold (pc-2020 from skip white performance) and holley 750DP "if" it will fit.
again, I am ok with modifying the air cleaner if necessary
thanks again

For a 383 and a Q-Jet, use the Performer RPM Q-Jet, part #7104. The stock air cleaner will not fit but a Moroso Low Profile Racing Air Cleaner with a 3" tall filter will result in about 3/4" clearance with a stock hood. An L-88 hood will have more clearance.

Here are pics of my engine with that manifold and aircleaner, all under a stock '75 hood. Only thing I had to do was dimple the aircleaner base for the accelerator pump arm.

Here is an older photo of the engine with the lower Edelbrock Performer 2101 that allows use of the stock aircleaner.

Thanks Steve,
Can you give me some input on how your 383 performs (build specs and HP and how the car handles the HP)
I don't want a 1/4 mile car, but a dependable, nice driver with as much power that is reasonable for an otherwise stock car.
thanks again

Along this same set-up....is the Edelbrock RPM intake the same height as the Edelbrock RPM Air-Gap?

I assume it is but you know what happens when you assume!

Default clearance

Go get a can of playdough set on air cleaner and close hood then measure the height of playdough that will give you how much clearance you have to work with with your current setup

SB RPM & RPM Air-Gap are same height.
SB Performer Air-Gap is about 1/4" taller than Performer.

You are correct, as per Edelbrock's web site the RPM and Air Gap RPM are the same height.

No 383 here. Just a roller cammed 350 with Edelbrock heads. Car is still a lot of fun to drive but I am itching to change things up a bit. Maybe LS3 or even BBC swap.

Default right number

how much HP/Torque are you at and what do you think is your goal.
I am trying to figure out what the magic number is to have the right balance between performance and drivability/relability

I am probably right about 375 HP/400 ft lbs at the crank. Like to get it in the 550 range for both at the crank.

Could you tell a difference when you went from the 2101 to the 7101?
