Sooo, now I need heads too :drunk: . I want to stay with the old style outer parimeter valve cover mounts and really don't want to deal with buying used. Any sugestions for the best heads for the money. Looks like I may be priced out of the stroker now,
thanks again
AFR 180 or 195 is about the best you can get for the dollars spent.

My 79 runs a 383 with 5.7 rods, externally balanced. I've been running it for years, since before there were internally balanced cranks available. Its a great motor. I rebuilt it last winter and moved up to a hydraulic roller (Comp Cams Magnum). Didn't think the cam swap could be worth the money but it is. One of the best mods you can make. I use the Trick Flow heads, but would look at Edelbrock or another aluminum head next time. Too many issues getting the Trick Flow heads to work, and don't believe they are any better.

Bottom line: 383's are cheap to build and well worth the money. Buy the best heads you can afford. If you can still afford the roller cam, its well worth it. With aluminum heads aim for compression in the 10:1 range.

What problems/issues are you having with the TF heads?

Some (maybe all) aluminum valve covers don't fit. I had to grind the crap out of a set of LT-1 valve covers to get them on. Had some clearance issues between the rockers and the valve covers. The guide plates are unique to the TF heads, as are eight of the rocker studs. Had trouble installing aftermarket springs. Most don't fit. Comp Cams beehive springs worked. Just a lot of oddball parts. Very difficult to make them fit & work. Once they're on, they work well.

I used 1" valve cover spacers - painted orange - I think I got them from Jegs - I have roller rockers and they worked great and kept the car looking stock
