lemme see, Phillips screws been around for centries...#1-4 fit's all, magnetic tips hold fine, self centering, works off axis/on an angle....
not to mention hex caps...work fine....wish Metric was accomplished 50 years ago so I I, ME....didn't have to deal with the changeover....but fine, the changeover was done...took forever, but it's behind us now....
but TORX????
that damn completely USELESS crap????
can't tell at a glance the size...it is 40, 42, 45 or 47???
and who needs it....
as if allen hex wasn't bad enough....especially with the metric changeover to deal with...but that damn useless TORX??? that illegitimate that invented that crap needs shot between eyes in the WORST way.....
TORX...home of the wring out on seatbelt bolts....never a problem with 13/16 old tyme bolts....metric equivalent would be fine...near 18MM....but NO they got to use that damn TORX....use a damn pipewrench to get the bolt out....
at least a allen hex head type screw can use a ball tipped wrench...
but TORX??? hell no....not that I"ve seen anyway....
worst yet, TORX headed bolts...as in what the hell is the point????
{stupid question} what does torx look like?
I wouldnt have known what you are talking about 3 days ago!! :) But, I went to take the top of my new carb off the other day and ran into these things for the first time. They look like Allen heads, except instead of looking like the shape of a six- sided stop sign, they are shaped like a six pointed star. I went to the autoparts store and he said, "Sure, Torx, we got tools". I never seen em before, mainly because I havent looked under the hood of an American car built after 1980 !! :) MJ
TORX is that stupid flower shaped hex like that looks allmost like a bolt, maybe even a 12 point bolt head...
but the most irritating is that allen headed thing...looks allmost like allen hex cap,...it's a hex cap allright, with a rounded fluting arrangement....
sometimes gotta look close, then fit every damn Torx bit in the garage to determine the correct size, as one too small will move the bolt, but may round off for lack of contact area....thing is...can't tell at a glance...no way...
and then you gotta know the feel of the right one....it's really snug, so no allowance for anything fudge factor in off center socket alignment...
A ball headed allen wrench is just that, a hex shaped ball round end...so it acts like a universal allowing pivot in the bolt head....
You know what security torx is...??? dremmel tool cut off blade, screwdriver slot instantly, back bolt out, and then replace with common sense fastener....
Your rant just said everything I have always thought about Torx. If we have to deal with Allen (which I don't like either) the balldriver wrenches are the way to go. Another thing I don't understand is why GM ever decided to use half english and half metric bolts on many cars.
You have'nt had any TORX fun until you've done the halfshafts on an '80-'81 four speed car OR '80-'82 with gymkhana suspension!!! Especially if it's a Rust Belt car!!! Will definetly test your faith and your patience!!! :yesnod:
