Default Seat Belts

I am working on the seat belts of a 75'. The retractors don't work anymore and the seat belts need to be cleaned. I want to take the retractor assemblies apart to see what is wrong. Has anyone ever tried that ? I could not find any replacement parts other than the whole retractor or complete seatbelt assemblies. Any advice ?

Check with Snake Oyl on the cost of having your originals rebuilt.

depends on what you are doing with the car. if restoring, snake oyl does a nice job but they are expensive. In fact they did my set about 10 years ago. But now they are old and worn i'm looking into installing a set of rear seat belts from a 4th generation camaro. They units are pretty close to a bolt-in and have safety improvements over your original set in both the latches and the retractors. Do a search on this site for more info.

Thanks a lot.

Would the Camaro ones match the Corvette colors? (Mine is medium saddle for the 75').

I had a very costly and bad experience with ssnake-oyl - it's all in the name, be careful...

Don't know. You need to do some research. I found a set on ebay in ebony for $25.

I managed to get my retractors working by taking them off and spraying them with WD40 (a lot of spraying!!!!)
It worked great, still changing them though, they are so rusted i dont trust them to save my life.
Ordered new belts from willcox, will let you know how they are when i get them.

If you get new belts you will have to take the retractors apart. I need to do that to clean the belts. On the cap on the side it says 'do not remove'.

Hmmmm....

I know, by new belts i meant the whole thing, retractors, belt, everything...
I costs a lot but in Belgium i cant get people to rebuild belts and i dont want to take the risk with mine.
They where rusted solid and wouldnt move at all. I took them off, sprayed the inside of the retractor with loads of WD40 and played with them for a while and they now work, but everything is so rusted and weak it looks like it could break if i ever needed them, thats why i got new ones.
Also the shoulder retractor doesnt lock anymore, not sure if its meant to though...

Ohh. I misunderstood you.

I think they are meant to lock. Mine look good, but don't lock at all - both sides. I will try to take them apart to see what's going on. If I cant get it to work I will have them rebuilt, if it makes sense.

Thats strange!
My top retractors both look great but dont lock either!
The bottom ones are just held together by rust...
Maybe the top ones are not meant to lock? Im doing some research on it but cant find anything... Could someone confirm that please.

Cheers

I am pretty sure they are supposed to. The lower one holds you in the seat and the shoulder one holds your upper body in position.

But don't know it for sure.
