Default vacuum pump question

So with the snow this past weekend, it looks like I am in for the winter. It's OK though, I am kind of looking forward to winter projects, and the first one on the list is to find and fix the vacuum leak that I knew I had, and got worse as this past season progressed. Anyway, I want to buy a vacuum pump, but most of them seem to be advertised for working on AC systems. Is this OK? Or is there a special type for working on the engine-driven vacuum system?

Does anyone have a specific recommendation of one they have used and like?

Thanks for any input.

PK

Just buy yourself a long hose from your FLAPs to run outside to a source of vacuum on your daily driver. Much cheaper

Although that will work Mike, running the car in a garage in winter with the door shut is a bad idea. A pump is much safer and draws less complaints from the better half - RE: smell.

PK, afaik the A/C pumps will work but the schrader valves need to be removed. I would also purchase a vacuum gauge if you don't have one and T it in with the test hose.

When I was working on my vacuum system I used air pressure to find the leaks. I have a pressure guage that reads in ounce/inches instead of pounds. Several ounces of pressure and I could hear every leak.

Default like the one for bleeding brakes

I use the little hand operated vacuum pump like the one for bleeding brakes. It has a built-in gauge, and you can use it to generate vacuum to test as well. Inexpensive and available lots of places, and usually comes with the small kit of different attachments to allow to hook it to lots of different systems.

Good luck!
