I would like to know what the difference is in this oil VS regular oils other than the ZDDP

Why use a diesel oil when there are so many good choices specifically designed for our engines?

Thanks. I have heard in the past that folks were using Rotella for the elevated ZDDP levels and since Rotella is half the price of most of the other oils with high ZDDP I was wondering if it was appropriate to use and save some $. These specialty, racing and synth olis have gotten so expensive lately. Of course if its not good to run in my car I will avoid it for sure and spend the extra . Also Mobil suggested their turbo diesel truck oil which has phos of 1100 and zinc 1300 but is not cheap as Rotella. Thanks for the opinion.

billa, I don't think this link to AMSOIL works any more. Am I wrong? I cannot find anywhere in any of their technical documents where they specifically state their ZDDP levels. It's always scary when numbers disappear.
AMSOIL says that "ZDDP levels in Z-ROD Synthetic Motor Oil exceed the limits of API SM and newer specifications.", but I cannot find where the API SM spec contained in the API standards indicates a ZDDP requirement.

I did find these T5 10w-30 Rotella Test Results dated 2014. This is Cj4/SM rated which is what is on my oil bottle.

I called the Shell Tech line specifically about the Shell Rotella T5 10w-30 synthetic blend.
If the package says CJ4 then it has 1300 PPM of zinc and 1100 Phosphorus.
They are coming out with a new blend that is CK4 and it has 1200 PPM of zinc and still around 1100 ppm of Prosperous.

One thing that would be helpful is since talk about flat tappet protection depends somewhat on spring pressures, maybe including some spring pressures and how much zinc would be a good idea.
Something like:
xxx lb - light pressure, aaaa ppm ZDDP needed
yyy lb - moderate pressure, bbbb ppm ZDDP needed
zzz lb - heavy pressure, cccc ppm ZDDP needed
Yes, ti says we need at least 1000 ppm, but then it is mentioned in several locations you can get away with less with light pressures and slow easy ramps, but need more with heavy pressures and aggressive ramps. But what are we really looking at on pressures ramps?

The comment regarding mild cams was more to point out why some folks note to have used low-ZDDP oils with no issues. As an example, many Chevy lo po performance engines use the venerable GM "390" cam with .390 lift and a very mild ramp and extremely low spring pressure...especially for high mileage engines that rarely see more than 4,000 RPM.

The make is : Castrol Edge 10/60 full synth.
I am wondering why many do have problems with oils like this.

It's covered in the first post, but the problem overall seems to be old, hard seals that are maybe getting a little sealing help from gunk and varnish. Synthetics are more solvent, and dissolve those deposits and expose bad seals - nearly always the front main seal.
Newer engines with modern seals have zero issues.

That's the oil used by the BMW M3 E46, I'm pretty sure that can be found in USA
