after installing the comp cam beehive set up on my 454 ho crate, i had a lot of lifter clatter when the mill warmed up and the oil came up to temperature...it seems the springs were to strong for the factory hydraulic roller lifters....the installed heights were right on at 1.880 and the lash was set 3 different times.....after calling comp cams and speaking with matt (tech) we determined a lifter change was in order....pulled the intake yesterday and installed new lifters from comp and it seems everything is ok now....mill is smooth and quiet now and looking forward to a test drive when the weather permits, rocker geometry is perfect and will post a pic later.....apparently some lifters are not up to these springs and actually their rate is not that much stronger than the stock dual springs that came from the factory....
What part number of BeeHive spring was exceeding what part number of H-roller lifter?
The reason I ask is because PaulDana was thing about installing the BeeHive springs
That is right. I hope he does not run into the same issue. One thing that might affect this that I didn't think of was that the lifter sees a higher spring rate than measured due to the stability of the beehive over the dual springs even though the rate and pressures are similar. Comp did recommend the spring that Pauldana ended up purchasing for his application. I wonder if increasing the installed height of the beehive to reduce seat and open pressures would have solved your problem without new lifters. This is one reason I ended up going with a rev kit instead of increasing spring pressure at the lifter internals.

yeah i know..it was originally my suggestion to try them..... and let me tell you i don't know if i am an isolated incident because my mill came out of the gm factory in early 2001 or not but the stock bb hyd roller lifters would not cut it and i mean after three valve adjustments and ive been doing this stuff since waay back!! i was at a cross roads to either remove the springs and go weaker or pull the intake and change them out.....i changed them and everything seems ok now although i had to go down 3/4 turn to make them quiet...part #...24926120-16.....bb chevy.....good luck to all and merry x mas......
I have to adjust the valves on my 496 this weekend. The motor is new and rockers clack like crazy when cold. After about 20 mins of running they will quiet down some but still not enough for me. The builder assembled it with only 1/8 turn of preload so we are thinking another 1/8 turn may be enough, hopefully. Mine is also a hyd roller with Isky(Morel) lifters.
Your kidding UOP Shadow was the coolest car ever made
You actually mean both of them!
It is actually maintained by a fellow shop. But we are often pitted together as we travel around the US doing the Historic races. So I've got to work on it several times in the last 4 years. The owner is like the hard luck guy. The guy that made these cars is still over by infineon raceway where this burnt.
I try to take my camera to pits when I can. We had three cars in this race
From: Who says "Nothing is impossible" ? I've been doing nothing for years.

They ran for a couple of years so there was probably more than 2 ? Maybe only 2 left or are these replicas ?

Hows the OP doing with his new springs ?
The guy that designed these all American Shadows is still alive and kicking. He has other cars in shop just waiting for somebody to restore to original racing trim. This owner has two real ones with a racing history required to be able to race in Historic racing.
You can't make a clone car and just show up. You have to submit paperwork and be excepted months ahead of time to even enter a race.
As to the poster..........I would wonder what was wrong with original GM H-roller lifters that in their design have a spring pressure limitation.
I would have gone to a thicker oil weight to keep the lifters pumped up when hot.
I have taken apart H-flat lifters to clean them in the past. You have a small spring and a plunger. oil pressure pumps them up and makes "ZERO" lash
