Default Speedo needle bouncing

When the muffler shop installed my new system they forgot to lift the speedo cable off the pipes. It melted and seized up. So I replaced with a new one but didnt replace the gear in the tranny.

Now at highway speeds the needle sways back and forth around 4-6 mph never staying still. At lower speeds I guess it's not noticeable.

Anyone seen this before and could it be my plastic gear or something else?

the cable maybe too long , or has a bad twist in it , look at it and see the routing , if you have a sharp turn it may make it jump , I find the replacement cables are junk! Ron

How do you make sure it's lubed? Use grease or motor oil?

I don't recall noticing any kind of lube.

use a low temp grease on it. A light coating of white lithium grease should do it

Use graphite. It's not affected by cold temperatures. It's also a dry lube so it won't gum up over time. It's powdery so take the cable out of the jacket and put the graphite on a rag, grab the rag from the bottom, wrap your hand with the rag around the cable and pull the cable through it.

If your speedometer cable can't be removed you will need to pour or inject the graphite into the end. Much tougher to tell if you got the whole thing that way.

I had that same problem on my 77. New cable didn't help. Pulled the speedo and took it to a local shop- he ran it on his test machine- same thing- the bearings for the needle were bad. $125 later and it's new.

Tim I'm with you on this and in most cases the head is the problem. I was under the impression the problem didn't start until the original cable was burned. It may just be the first worm and magnet bushing that is causing the problem.

Might also be a cable in a bind, or lack of lubricant on the cable. One quick way to find out is to remove the cable from the tranny, make sure it's not in a bind and then run the speedo up with a drill.
