I have tried to find a resource with a basic step by step to remove the headlight buckets as one assembly. I have both the AIM and service manual for my 71, but those point me to removal of the individual parts and I can't seem to find anything for the whole unit. Is there a reason I shouldn't be doing it this way? Thanks!
It can only be done if you have the radiator out, otherwise you have to remove the actuators (as far as I remember). It is also a lot easier if you remove the bracket going from the front bumper to the lower cross member.
The radiator, shroud, support and condenser are out. I have good access to everything.
Mark the location of the supports on the header bar so you can reinstall them in the same place.
Mark and disconnect the vacuum hoses. Disconnect the wiring harness. Can't remember if 71s have headlamp squirters, but disconnect the fluid hoses if they do.
Remove two bolts from the headlight support at the nose bar. You may have to remove the grilles to get to these. Remove remaining bolts in the header bar.
Nice pics from Eastltd, but remember, your 71 isn't like his car. With the crash bumper and lower panel removed per his pics, there is all kinds of room to work.
The lower panel will not come out of your 71 like it does in the later cars. Expect to have to take your units out through the engine compartment.

Makes sense, luckily I have the engine out too. Working on the front end rebuild, and starting the engine compartment and wanted to get the headlights out so I can assess my needs. Thanks again, you are always a respectful and valuable resource!
