For some reason my ZZ4 installation FAQ that used to be on the forum is gone.
EDIT - Just saw the sticky with all the old tech articles. Here is my ZZ4 FAQ:
You can use the stock manifolds but ZZ4's exhaust ports are D shaped and if I remember correctly they sit a little higher than original stock heads meaning you might have to massage the pipes up a bit to get them connected. Personally I would just go with headers.
My ZZ4 fits under the base model hood with a q-jet and the stock dual snorkel air filter box. One other thing is you have to grind down one of the timing chain cover bolts to get the water pump to fit. It's not that bad just test fit until enough material is removed. THe other thing is it came with a auto trans flexplate so I had to get a flywheel that worked with the ZZ4 as it's externally balanced. Other than that it's pretty much plug and play.
I like my ZZ4, good bang for the buck at the time (2001 is when I installed it and it was $3700 with the headers and a flywheel).
Now for the bad news. The ZZ4 is discontinued. The good news is GM makes a ZZ6. Not sure it will fit under the hood though.
At the time when I installed my ZZ4 a few people were doing the LS1 swap out of donor cars as there were no LSx crate motors at that time. Today you can get a LSx crate motor and if I had to do an engine swap today that is the direction I'd go.
And I don't get why people bitch about old threads. Is the information not applicable today? It isn't like 2002 was the dark ages or anything.

Thanks for the detailed post, exactly the type of info I was looking for.
Can you comment on the ZZ4's idle quality and street manners?
first, best for you? no clue.
money?
power?
lasting?
ask yourself
where in an rpm range you want power
how much power
be careful
wanting a little more than you got can end in an expensive dissapointment
look at how you drive now and use that to ask how to get power

I want it to look stock, at a casual glance.
Will be using the stock exhaust.
Engine will be mated to a 5-speed. (possibly 6-speed).
I put a Chevy Performance ZZ383 crate motor in my '73 coupe. Wow 425hp/465lb-ft nice streetable motor. I had a Demon carb with headers and a big block under car stock exhaust. This was a great combination and ran on pump gas with no problems.

Bingo...that is the crate I would go with or similar if I needed to replace my engine. My OEM L-82 355 with 10.2 Compression, roller cam, and AFR heads is a monster with 450+ Gross HP and BIG mid range torque and a joy to drive now as well...shocking with a 355 no less
