Default Choosing a dual exhaust system??

I have been undecided about which of these 2 sytems to purchase.
I like the pro pipes set up because its all stainless.
I like the corvette central set up because they seem to only do corvette stuff.
Does anybody have either system and whats the good and bad of each system???

You could save yourself a lot of dough by getting a local muffler shop to build you a setup...

Had a complete setup done on the 78 I used to have, and WITH a pair of Flowmasters installed, they charged me $200 total.

Did you buy the mufflers ahead of time or from them? Was this stainless pipes?
We have a place in town or 2 that make custom exhaust, some reason i was thinkin' it would be more expensive.

I also let the local shop do it. I just took the car in said I wanted a 2-1/2" mandral-bent system with a crossover, SS Ultra-Flo mufflers, and 2-1/2" stainless tips. I let them sweat the bending/fitment.

In addition to saving a ton of money, you know that the system will fit because they will work with your manifolds/headers and make it to fit.

Have you looked into allencorvetteexhaustsystems.com? They have a 4 chambered system that eliminates the mufflers. Seems like they have deals going too.

I have the pipes system,i got it from summit racing, cheaper, and it is a very nice system.very nice high quality .you will like the street pro mufflers, sound the best out of the three mufflers they have.youtube has a sound bite of the system. The pipes system is alot better then corvette central system, and i mean ALOT BETTER. The bends in the system are true mandrel bends, smooooth, no kinks at all, like others. My system was really easy to put on.You wont be disappointed.

I did the Corvette Central exhaust with Magnaflows. Easy install, looks and sounds great.

I have a custom dual exhaust on my '80 that includes parts from a prevoius dual system that was attached to block hugger headers. Now I have full length headers (WOW, what an improvement over block huggers!) with an easy modification (behind the shifter) to the front cross member to get a few more inches of ground clearance.

I would have save some $$ if I just went with custom pipes in the first place.

I went with the Corvette Central 2.5" duals w/ Magnaflow mufflers. Everything fit with no problems.

Is your car an 81 with a catalytic converter? Are you looking to remove the catalytic converter and go to true dual exhausts? You may have a problem trying to get a muffler shop to do that if you want to go that route.

If the car has a cat, remove the cat (replace with a "test pipe") before you go to the shop and you should have no problems with them installing a true dual exhaust. A retail shop is not suppose to remove a cat on a car that is already in place but there is no issue if the cat is not there to begin with. The local shop cannot remove a system with the cat and replace it with an exhaust system that does not have a cat. In most states, especially in the Northeast (I have registered and had to pass inspection for 26 years (removed my cat in 1983) in NY, Mass, and RI. The emissions police will not bother most of the time here with cars over 25 years old, which is how it should be. Kind of ridiculous to bust chops on cars beyond 15-20 years old. How much are they really driven? Not even a pin hole on your butt in relation to any emissions issue!

I have the Pypes system and like it. Here's a thread of other Pypes owners with links to their install threads.

I also installed the Corvette Central exhaust with Magnaflows on my '79. It was an easy install and fit perfectly. Very happy with it.

This is an Allen's SS system that I installed in 1991...

The fit was outstanding and after all these years including 3 years living on the beach in Hawaii, it still looks terrific.

Allen's have been great people to deal with over the years on a number of projects. Give them a call and talk to them, I doubt you will be disappointed.

IMHO, unless you drive on the beach or where salt is used on winter roads, you don't need a SS system.
Also, IMHO, unless you are running in hi flow conditions at high RPMs, you don't need mandrel bends.
Thirdly, IMHO, an X crossover is effective at reducing backpressure and lowering exhaust noise and is preferable to an H crossover.
These all mean that a quality local muffler shop should be fine.
I use Edelbrock RPM mufflers that I like a lot.

This is poor. :o

They do not appear to have used a mandral and look how the pipes pinch down at the bends.

An exhaust system should be fitted to your car not the other way around. It should be hand welded in place as all C3's are little different here and there over the years. A good muffler shop won't charge you that much more than buying one of these kits and crawling around on the ground with clamps ( no no for me anyway )

Here's my 3 inch SS mandrel bent system ( some of you have seen it 100 times I know ). The whole back part including the mufflers can be disconnected in 5 minutes at the drag strip. Get it done at a good muffler shop and you won't regret it.

I'd love to know what shop you guys are using, I am considering doing the CC true dual setup but checked a local shop after seeing your post. He wanted $600 with magnaflows. CC wants $325. now just have to do the work myself.

I thought I saw the magnaflows advertised in CC for $200 a pair and you got the whole system for $200?
