Default Bilstein or Edelbrock Shocks choice

I'm redoing my suspension this winter (right now) and need to
replace my shocks while I'm there. I'm looking for something that
won't ride to harsh but something I could auto cross with. The
car rides on steel springs and the ride height is lowered 2''.

What has been the better shock for you and why? Yes I did a
search but need an up to date opinion.

Thanks,
Riggs.

I've tried both and the initial ride quality was about the same. The Bilstein seemed to hold up longer so I've stayed with them.

I have found them a www.vansteel.com and at www.summitracing.com for
about the same price although I was emailed earlier and was told that forum
members get 10% off at vansteel site, I think you have to call and confirm that though.

i have never had the bilsteins, but i have had the red adjustable konis and currently have the edelbrock's on my 69 conv. i have not noticed any improvement in ride from the edelbrocks. they say with the inertia valve the ride should take out some of the harshness of the big bumps around town. i have not found this to be the case. the konis are a better shock, especially on the freeway. they just feel better when you hit bumps or expansion strips. if koni had honored their lifetime warranty i would have had them replaced and i would still be using them.

I vote for Bilstein Sports, too.
I bought mines at Corvette America, with the composite rear monospring.
But I have to admit I never tried Edelbrock shocks...

I have had AC Delco, Koni's, KYB Gas A Just, Bilstein HD's, and now Bilstein Sports over 26 years that I have owned my car. Never had the Edlebrocks but I can tell you that the Bilsteins made the biggest difference in improving the ride with zero loss of handling control and were the best for the rear 360 composite spring in terms of controlling Hwy bounce. I currently run Bilstein HD's in the front with the 550 springs and Bilsteins Sports (30% stiffer than the HD's) in the rear with the 360 composite. For about $250 for Bilsteins, I don't know if I woud use anything else! Does Edlebrock make their shocks or does someone else? Obviously, Shocks/struts is all that Bilstein does which means that they are real good making that one component!

Bilsteins are the best all around shock. Koni's (reds) are good and adjustable. Bilsteins seem to last almost forever, Koni's don't. Both are rebuildable, but the Koni's seems to cost more for the rebuild service.

If you don't need adjustable, than go with Bilsteins. I have a pair of used 20+ year old Bilstein HDs on the front of my 72.

I have a pair of QA1 single adjustables on the rear. They have a good range of adjustment, but are a bit harsh. I doubt they will last long though as the exposed shafts constantly have a coating of shock oil on them, since new.

*** SOLD THEM ***
Ha, no, no hidden message here! It's just since I have them on I'll leave on since I went through the work. As I said, I noticed no appreciable difference what so ever. I run 460 coils (cut 1/2 turn) in the front & a 7 leaf steel in the rear. I'm in no hurry to sell the edelbrocks, however if the poster was looking to buy that particular shock, I'd hate to see him pay full price anywhere. I tried the Edelbrocks on a suggestion from Dick Gulstrand. I tried the Bilstien Sports (I found the HD's too loose) to see what everyone was talking about. So far, not a miracle shock. IMO

They worked with Ricor racing shocks to develop their shocks. They are basically using Ricor inertia valves and adapted the shocks for street applications instead of the specialty ones that Ricor makes for racing. Not sure who actually manufactures them. I'm guessing Ricor, but may be a 3rd party.

I have been running Edelbrocks for several years now and am pleased with them. Wife likes the ride for our vacations and they are adequate (at least for now) for doing HPDE's. I think its a pretty good design for a compromise street / strip shock.

Bilstein HDs for normal springs and street driving. Bilstein Sports for high spring rate springs and autocrossing.
