When i first bought my 74, the first thing that caught my eye was the hooker headers running out and down the side of the car. Now all i want to do is remove them. They're to loud, the gas fumes are right there in your face, and most of all they burn the hell out of your legs when you get out of the car. I dont know maybe its just me, but they sure do look good!
Re: Does anyone else hate their sidepipes? (Dr_stingray)
Yeah i hate them when im on a long drive and all they do is choke me and give me bad hearing, but every time i get out and look at them or someone gives me a compliment, they totally redeem themselves!!!
Re: Does anyone else hate their sidepipes? (Dr_stingray)
For those that know me I am a real advocate for originality. I have gone through the NCRS judging manuals so many times I can almost tell you the correct casting number for a water pump housing. However, when it comes to side pipes this is one option that Corvette should have retained. I know there were emission laws but they could have remedied that. Side pipes 'ROCK' :D :D :D
Re: Does anyone else hate their sidepipes? (Dr_stingray)
I would say that you are one of a very few. I love my pipes.
perhaps the muffler inside is shot or the guy before you used a glass pack instead of a thrush or those super turbo ( the one I would buy if I had the cash this year).
As far as burning your leg well I've don it too but I only did it once.
If I ever move to a place that does not allow them then I will bue 2 sets of exhaust one for the inspection and the real one.
Re: Does anyone else hate their sidepipes? (Dr_stingray)
i can see that im getting no where with you guys! lol! I dont have any mufflers cats or anything they may be baffled at the least. They sure are loud i wish yall could hear these things especially with my cam!
Re: Does anyone else hate their sidepipes? (Dr_stingray)
I had side pipes on one of my other vettes and after burning my legs badly one summers day I couldn't wait to get rid of them. I now have chambered under car exhaust which is as loud as side pipes, but dump out the back. Everytime I think of getting rid of them I catch a little bit of what they sound like and decie to keep em. But they sure can give you a headache on a long trip.

Side pipes 'ROCK' :D :D :D
Binnie pretty much summed it up. When I went to purchase my car and the guy fired it up for the first time for me, that was it. Had to have it. The sound was incredible! He started the car on a gravel driveway, and I can remeber the exhaust blowing craters in the gravel - rocks scattered everywhere. Was pretty cool to see :D . As for the burns to the legs, I guess it's tough having the Hooker style compared to the original type. I can drive around all day and the covers stay cool to the touch. It's one of the things I associate a Vette with, I always think sidepipes go with Vettes more than any other car. Kinda hoping to see a return on the C6

Re: Does anyone else hate their sidepipes? (Mike69)
I have homeade 2.5" glasspack mufflers which uses the Hooker side tube for the outer casing. The fiberglass around the core tubes does a very good job of keeping the pipes from scalding my legs. I can touch the side tube for about 5 seconds without any pain immediately after a drive.
Now, the sound rattles pictures on my walls when the car is idling in the garage.
Re: Does anyone else hate their sidepipes? (Dr_stingray)
Nope, not me. Never had a day of regret, like em' even more when I work under the car and now that they are ceramic coated and sound the way I want I'll never go back "down under"
Re: Does anyone else hate their sidepipes? (Dr_stingray)
Dr_stingray. Yep I hate them sooooo much, this spring CHROME 72" sidepipes will be on my Z71 GMC Extended Cab. I HATE THESE THINGS!! JCL   :chevy "Sidepipes are the way"
