Usually the most likely reason is that the vacuum modulator hose has come unhooked.
If that happens it will eventually shift out of 1st but you have to rev the engine up pretty good for it to happen.

i had it red lined for about 45 seconds and it wouldnt shift. could it be the governor gear is broken? also, i was messing around with the vacuum hoses this past weekend trying to figure out my headlights... maybe something got put back together wrong? Thanks for the info.

ok... its fixed. that little plastic spiral gear on the governor was FUBARed. i pulled one out of an old 350 tranny and put it in this one and it works great. of course, i had to pull the driveshaft and tail piece to get the busted gear out. but, hey, whatever works. just happy its on the road again.
