How do you match the engine to the VIN? I pulled 12R569400T0408CTL off the block. My 79 is supposed to be an L48 by the VIN. Is this the original engine?

Guy,
The T0408CTL is the engine useage code. The 12R569400 is the vin deritive. The last 5 or 6 of that number should match your VIN.
Need to recheck those numbers. The T0408CTL translates as T=Towonada (sp) engine plant (which would be a big block, Vette small blocks would start with V for flint plant), 0408 is engine assembly date (April 8), and CTL is engine useage. For the small block the CTL was used three times, first in 1972 as a 350ci/165hp with automatic in the A and F bodies, then in 1975 as a 400ci/175hp in the A and B bodies, and in 1978 as a 305ci/145hp in the B body. (check the casting date to determin which it is) The other number should look like 1Z9499999 for a Vette (1=chevy, Z=vette, 9=year, 499999=VIN)
I rechecked the numbers. That's what it says. I bought this vette about 3 weeks ago. If it helps, it has a Holley Street Dominator intake and an Edelbrock 1406 carb. The VIN for my car is 1Z3789S405145.

Guy,
The stamp pad should have two numbers, one would be 1Z9S405145 to indicate the VIN and the other would be V9999XXX where XXX would be (based on L48) either ZZZ or ZAF if 4-speed or ZAB, ZAC, ZAD, ZAJ if automatic. 9999 would be the engine assembly date (mmdd).
