I sandblasted my aluminium intake a while ago and was looking at polishing it but I figured it would be way too much work so I need to paint it or it'll get dirty way too easily...I was wondering if there was a clear high temp paint I could use on that? Or else I'll paint it black like my block.
I believe it's called "HI-Temp Engine Enamal" clear. Withstands tempts to 500 degrees. I got some from Pep Boys. Used it over a painted oil pan, but haven't started the car since, so longevity is still in question.
There was a thread on this a few weeks ago. You might want to check the archives. Some say the clear will yellow. I just sprayed mine with Plastikote 500 degree clear. Haven't fired it up yet, still putting everything back together. I will post a few weeks from now with results.
I painted my stock aluminum intake with hi-temp clear and it turned yellow. I would not paint it with clear.
I did nothing to my Edelbrock performer and it's held up pretty well. Just keep it clean and try not to get gas on it. I use carb cleaner on a rag to wipe it clean if I spill anything on it.
EXCELLENT! I have easy access to the plastikote products. Thats the ticket!
Ticket?? I beg to differ... Wait till you have to do any maintenance that involves gas. Clear coat and gas don't mix too well. If given the option - I'd have the intake powercoated in clear after its cleaned, etc. Would hold up much better.
I did my manifold clear with my engine rebuild about 5 years ago. I do not think I would do it over that way. Mine has yellowed a bit but the real problem is that I had a small gas leak from the rear bowl on my holley carb. Where the gas leaked and then vaporized the manifold loos like poopie. Obviously you don't plan for leaks like this but when it happens the clear coat will not stand up. I would just paint it the engine color or go polished.
Painted my TFS aluminum heads with Plastikote 500 degree engine clear TWO years ago. No yellowing.

Lohkay...lets not get carried away! I said I painted my HEADs. If you're set on clear paint, Eastwood has a new clear paint especially for intakes & other bare metal parts that is RESISTANT to gasoline. I have no personal experience with it but maybe its worth a try.
what did u use to get the black off of ur finned valve covers..mine are looking haggered and i was thinking of stripping to metal like urs..
Maybe I can answer for him, I just did mine...sandblasting was the key...left a rough finish tho so I figured I'd spray clear in the fins and polish the rest...we'll see how it turns out.

Hi, just got back on the Forum again.
My covers never were black. They were/are natural aluminum with no coating.
Just wipe them down with WD40 every few months.
I think the black covering/paint started sometime in mid 70's.
