Hi guys, I just put together a basket job a 1979 vette and upon road testing. I find that the 4 speed trans is noisy in all of the gears except
4th. Is this normal? Thanks
They must have had alot of complaints when the car was new.
Is there any particular fluid I can use to calm down the noise alittle?
I have just regular penzoil 90wt in there now.
I would check to make sure it's not an M22 first. The PO may be wrong. I have a document that should help you ID it. PM me your e-mail and I'll send it to you.
The guy I got the car from tells me the trans is from a 1978.
I believe '78 and '79 used Saginaws. Mine is original, rebuilt when the engine was out (3-2 syncro shot), quiet before and after. If I remember correctly, Sags are easy to spot because they have an iron case and a 7 (?) bolt side cover.
1978 and 1979 L48 cars had a Saginaw 4 Speed case number 3925656.
My 78 has a pronounced noise with it's saginaw in 3 out of 4 gears as well. Almost sounds like a supercharger whine.
I can't tell you if this is normal or not, just that mine definitley has the noise too.
They are referred to as a "muncie" because these oddball units were produced in Muncie, IN instead of Saginaw, MI. So they are Saginaws that are sometimes referred to as a Muncie by documentation.
I suspect it may be a result of a worn center bearing and possibly pilot.
I had one upon test drive the seller assured me its normal to make noise. I opened it up and center bearing was worn. Repalced it and all was quiet. Also good time to examine clutch system and replace ball stud, throw out fork and anything that is not perfect.
