I kinda thought it probably was the center bin , the p/o couldn't come up with the oval door / compartment key can a locksmith make one if
i take him the compartment lock and a blank key ? or is there another
way ?

Some can but not all. I'd call ahead. Depends on their stock of antique locks and keys and of course their experience.
The same key stock was used in 1970, 1974, 1978 etc.
They rotated them in every 4 years.
Yeah , the local locksmith did manage to make me up a couple of oval
keys for my compartment lock . Worked slick , original GM keys too .
I wouldn't try that at Wal-Mart , lol .
