Default 81 Corvette AC conversion?

I have a 1981 Corvette with the R4 AC compressor, has anyone converted to the other style compressor(long one) or does anyone know if it can be done? What would the cost be, and how much PITA factor is it?

The reason I'm asking is I bought a set of billet aluminum brackets for the AC and Alternator, the AC bracket won't work with the R4 compressor, and I'd like to get rid of that big nasty thing anyway.

Sounds like a lot of work, unless you were going to have to repair anyway. I am changing mine to R134, other than that, It wasn't broken. Good Luck :smash:

If you are going to go to another type of compressor, why not go with a Sanden compressor? They are very compact and perform great. If you want specific information on converting to a different type of compressor, check out the forums at http://www.aircondition.com they have links on that page to all sorts of air conditioning product resellers along with a pretty knowledgeable group of people that hang out there.

I can understand why you would want to get rid of that R4, but if it were me I would get rid of it because they are a piece of cr@p, not because of the bracket, but that's just my opinion. Good thing is they are disposable, and relatively cheap as far as compressors go. I think they can be replaced for around 125 bucks. I have heard good things about the Sanden as well.
